What this I-Search Means to Me

I really feel live I have gotten a good understanding of the topic of photojournalism and feel that I’m better equipped to make a decision about it as a career choice, but I’m still not sure what that decision should be. I am more passionate about the field of photojournalism than ever, but I’m doubtful that this career is one which suits me. I like the idea of working with people and would love to travel and document history, but I don’t have the stomach for blood and am a softy when it comes to pain. I tend to take criticism personally and would fear editors who cut my work or reject it. I hope to someday have a family and husband and I would want to be able to provide for them and be there for them. This wouldn’t be very possible if I was to pursue a career in photojournalism. I do have a passion for the job, as I stated before, which is necessary for the career, but as for talent and experience, I just don’t know. Unfortunately my school doesn’t have a photography class (I know, what’s up with that?).

I hope to at some time take the next step in my search by taking the advice of the people I’ve “met” through this research. I haven’t had much experience with film cameras because of resource reasons, but I’m very excited to be able to experiment and hopefully discover some talent with a high quality digital camera my daddy will send with my mom and I to Germany this summer. I will possible even talk to a local newspaper in hopes to follow a real photojournalist to see them in action. I found a good deal of colleges have journalism programs and photography programs and a few even have photojournalism programs. I found it is encouraged to gain education in photojournalism but it is most important to gain experience by doing as an intern or part time job or whatever. So wrapped up it means that “photojournalism is a calling not a job.” (Winslow) My next step is to find if it is calling me.
